William Lobel specializes in representation of borrowers in connection with out of court financial
restructuring and debtors in possession in chapter 11 cases. Mr. Lobel also represents trustees and
creditors’ committee in complex chapter 11 and chapter 7 cases.
Industries in which Mr. Lobel has present or past representations
include privately-held regional and publicly-traded national homebuilders; sub-prime and hard money lenders;
gaming casinos; fast food and casual dining restaurants; hospitality, technology, health care, entertainment
and food service.
His present representation include home builders, commercial real
estate developers, sub-prime lenders and others involved in the real estate industry.
A sought after speaker and panelist, Mr. Lobel’s recent speaking
engagements range from law-related professional association educational programs to Real Estate &
Construction Division of the Jewish Federation to the CT Realty Shareholders 2008 Meeting to USC Gould
School of Law and Chapman University School of Law.
Recognized as a leading bankruptcy/restructuring lawyer by Chambers &
Partners in its 2008 Chambers USA Leading Lawyers for Business Guide, he was also selected for
inclusion in Southern California “Super Lawyers” by Los Angeles Magazine in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Mr.
Lobel was chosen for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America for 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 in the
specialty area of bankruptcy and creditor-debtor rights law. Mr. Lobel served as a lawyer delegate to the
Ninth Circuit Judicial Council from 1990 – 1996. He is a founder and past president of the Orange County
Bankruptcy Forum and the California Bankruptcy Forum. In 1998 he taught real estate bankruptcy at the
University of Miami Law School as an adjunct professor and currently lectures at the University of Southern
California Law School. He was the first recipient of the Peter M. Elliot award for “Outstanding Scholarship,
Ethics and Service to Orange County Bankruptcy Community” in 1999. In 2005 Mr. Lobel was inducted into and
became a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Bankruptcy which honors exceptional bankruptcy
professionals distinguished by their work, integrity and contributions to the administration of justice. In
2006 he began his appointment as a member of the Dean’s Counsel of Chapman Law School.
Mr. Lobel attended undergraduate and law school at the University of
Miami, Coral Gables, FL receiving his J.D. cum laude in 1969. While in law school, he served as
secretary to his law school class, as an associate editor of the University of Miami Law Review, as
executive editor of the law school yearbook, Amicus Curie and was elected to the Bar and Gavel and
the Wig and Robe honorary societies. Mr. Lobel was an award- winning University of Miami representative in
state, national and international moot court competitions.
A member of the Florida Bar since 1969 and the State Bar of California
since 1980, Mr. Lobel was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1997, the U.S. District
Court, Southern District of Florida in 1970; U.S. District Court, Northern, Central and Southern Districts
of California in 1980 and U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado in 2002.
